Although there are many types of walnut trees, three are the main types of walnuts that are consumed: English (or Persian) walnut, black walnut and white walnut. The English walnut has a thin shell that easily breaks. The Black walnut has a thick shell and has a much more sharp, distinctive flavor. The White walnut has a sweet taste and has a higher fat content than the other two types, although it is not as widespread as them.

The English walnut originates from India and the Caspian Sea areas and is therefore also known as “Persian walnut”. In the 4th century, the ancient Romans introduced the walnuts in many European countries where their cultivation began. In their history, the walnut trees are very honored because of their uses, which include: as food, as medicine, as shelter, as paints and for lamp oil. The Black and the white walnuts originate from North America and in particular from the Central Mississippi Valley and the Appalachian region. Today, the leading producers of walnuts are the United States, Turkey, China, Iran, France and Romania.

The walnuts are one of the foods that causes allergies. They should not be consumed in clean, isolated form so as not to trigger undesirable allergic reactions.
The walnuts are an excellent source of omega essential fatty acids. The walnuts are also a very good source of manganese and a good source of copper. In addition, the walnuts contain the antioxidant and phytochemical – ellagic acid. 25 grams of walnuts contain 163 calories, 3,81 grams of proteins and 16,30 grams of fats.
